About Advanced Cell Technology
Advanced Cell Technology is a biotechnology company specializing in the development of cellular therapies for the treatment of diseases that affect millions of people worldwide. The company applies stem cell-based technologies as well as other proprietary methods in the field of regenerative medicine to transform patient-specific therapies from the lab to the treatment arena.
As of 2010, Advanced Cell Technology is in the final stages of moving toward the Phase I clinical trials for its Retinal Pigment Epithelial (RPE). This line of research will address a number of retinal degenerative disorders. ACT has also progressed rapidly with its Hemangioblast (HG) platform for the treatment of blood and cardiovascular diseases. In Addition, the company’s Myoblast program is an autologous adult stem cell treatment for heart disease. The Myoblast program has successfully completed four Phase I clinical trials. It currently has FDA clearance to start Phase II trials.
ACT has recently announced the successful development of a novel technique that can generate embryonic stem cell lines without destroying embryos. This is a breakthrough in the ethical debate surrounding the industry. ACT has over 380 patents and patent applications.
Advanced Cell Technologies is also focused on solving the problem of graft-versus-host disease and immune rejection by creating stem-cell therapeutics that use donor tissues that are compatible, or those in which the immunologically active antigens on the donor cells are the same as those of the recipient. This way they will not activate an immune response leading to rejection. The ability to produce tissue cells for transplantation with the same genetic make-up as the patient may prove to be a competitive advantage for Advanced Cell Technology.
