Cerebral Palsy Treatment in Tiantan Puhua Hospital
|
Tiantan Puhua uses neural stem cells to treat Cerebral Palsy. These cells are derived from fetal stem cells. Neural Stem cells are multipotent, self-regenerating, cells, which are found in the brain. They have the potential to develop into three main cell types: astrocytes, nerve cells (neurons), and oligodendrocytes. They can renew themselves sufficiently to provide enough cells for treatment. All types of blood cells are descended from bone marrow stem cells. Stem cells grown from bone marrow can also, under special conditions, give rise to non-marrow cells such as neural cells. During the first week of the patient's stay in hospital, bone marrow is extracted from the hipbone in a simple operation. This procedure is done under a local anesthesia and is not painful. The cells are sent to the lab cultured for approximately 3-4 weeks. In the lab, the cells give rise to neural stem cells and are then cultured to increase their number. The number of stem cells depends on the patient's age and the level of his or her bone marrow activity. Within a month from the extraction, the cells are re-injected into the patient via lumbar puncture. Lumbar PunctureDuring a lumbar puncture procedure, a needle is inserted into the spinal canal in the back. A small amount of cerebral spinal fluid is collected, mixed with the stem cells, and re-injected into the cerebral spinal fluid. The injected cells circulate from the spinal cord to the brain. One cycle takes between six to seven hours. Tiantan Puhua Stem cell laboratoryAll stem cells used at Tiantan Puhua Hospital are processed in the hospital's own laboratory. Their laboratory's purity standards are higher than those used for research. Rehabilitation CenterTiantan Puhua’s cerebral palsy treatment protocol includes daily sessions of occupational and physical therapy, as well as acupuncture sessions and Chinese manipulation massage. |
