About Buddhist Tzu Chi General Hospital

Founded in August 1986, Buddhist Tzu Chi General Hospital received accreditation from the Taiwan Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation as a “Medical Center” in 2002. They received ISO certification that same year. Now the hospital operates almost 1,000 beds and has more than 300 physicians and surgeons. The hospital has a commitment to holistic medicine. This means that interdisciplinary methods of diagnosis and of treatment are used with many of their patients.

A wide range of procedures is performed at Buddhist Tzu Chi General Hospital, from organ transplantations to high-tech health screenings. Other specialty areas include stem cell research, stroke treatment, malignant tumor treatment, and orthopedic surgery (especially ankylosing spondylitis corrections, total knee replacements, and minimally invasive spinal surgeries).

Its many research centers include the Neuro-Medical Scientific Center. This center provides a stereotactic navigation system for the localization of vascular brain diseases and tumors and GammaKnife radiosurgery for brain tumors. The surgeons of the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Department perform off-pump (beating-heart) CABG, coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG), peripheral artery bypass grafting, lung cancer surgery, esophageal varices repair esophageal reconstruction, , VATS (video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery ), stenting, balloon angioplasty, and more.
The Stem Cell Center, a bone marrow registry to help people with blood illnesses, was established in 1993. Today, over 280,000 donors are registered. In fifteen years of operation, the center has helped locate donors for over 1,000 patients in 23 countries.
