About Mount Elizabeth Hospital

The Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre, located in Singapore, is Asia’s largest private medical centre. With the highest concentration of private specialists, it strives to be the premier tertiary healthcare provider in Singapore and the surrounding areas.

Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre is a 505 bed facility. It provides a wide range of medical and surgical services. The hospital has been accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI). In addition, it was the first private Asian hospital to win the Asian Management Award for exceptional people development and management.

The center offers specialist consultation for patients with blood disorders and blood cancers. These include various types of anaemia (such as Fanconi Anaemia, Sickle Cell Anaemia, Aplastic Anaemia, among others) marrow aplasias, coagulation disorders, thalassaemia, acute and chronic leukaemias, lymphomas, myelomas, and lympho-proliferative disorders.

Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Programme:

The Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre offers Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation. In this treatment, deficient bone marrow or malignant cells are eradicated using high dose chemotherapy (with or without radiation therapy). The patient is then given replacement cells that come from either bone marrow, peripheral blood stem cell, or cord blood order, to restore hematologic and immunologic function to health.

How does this treatment work? Normally, when high doses of chemotherapy are given, cancer cells are killed, but the patient’s ability to generate new blood cells is also destroyed. To counteract this, healthy stem cells (from bone marrow or peripheral blood or cord blood) are given to the patient. It takes about 2 to 3 weeks for the stem cells to grow again in his or her bone marrow space, and will, in time, produce new blood cells.
