Karen Brooks
Age at time of treatment: 43 years old
Illness: ALS
Country of Residence: Australia
Hospital: Tiantan Puhua Hospital
My Story:In the year between Karen’s diagnosis of ALS in May 2006 and receiving treatment at Tiantan hospital, her condition deteriorated rapidly. She could no longer use her arms and legs and needed help washing, dressing, getting in and out of bed. While getting dressed or otherwise doing big movements, she suffered great muscle pain. In addition, Karen’s voice was becoming weaker, and her speech was difficult to understand. She did not have enough strength to sit on her bed or lie down unassisted from sitting position. She could no longer walk or stand without support. A few days after her first daily IV, Karen started to slowly show improvements. Improvement continued over the course of her six week treatment. Her fingers, which were previously closed inside her palm, opened up and straightened. Before treatment, Karen could barely lift her arms. Afterwards she could lift her arms to chest height. She could now lift her legs from a sitting position almost to knee height. The cramps in her legs were almost gone.Karen's voice showed some small improvement, becoming louder and stronger, and her speech could be better understood though it was still slow. |
